Judy Kiehart, the author of Calico Lane, brought to life all her struggles of fighting for a place of recognition in a society where expressing her sexual identity was an abomination. This book was set in the early days of the 1960s and 1970s in Pennsylvania, USA. It was a time when people were ashamed of who they really were, their orientations, and inclinations, which were unconventional. Thus, they pretended and used the Church and religious piety as a cover-up.

From an Orthodox family, Judy found herself fighting through an era when there were rules; there were different rules for men and rules for women. Anything contrary was seen as shameful and unacceptable, like falling in love and losing it because of fear of her mechanical marriage, which cost her her happiness. Clouded with fears of how society would view her if they really saw who she was, the author takes us through the journey of her self-discovery, emotional rollercoasters, loss of loved ones, rape, rejection by family, and confusion. In the midst of all these, it got even worst. Whether she survived it or not will be one for you, dear reader, to find out.

This book was simply amazing! What a read! I have not enjoyed a book this good in a long while. I love how progressive the storyline is, from her childhood through her teen years down to her adulthood. I literally felt like I was watching a movie, and I could picture every description. The in-depth emotional analysis was great, and I got to appreciate the sexual differences among humans. I also loved how real and authentic every single bit of the story is. Well, it is an autobiography; therefore, nothing less was expected, and it did not disappoint at all.

I tried all I could to find a negative aspect to this book, but I could not see any! The book was inch perfect! I found only two grammatical errors in this book. Therefore, I would say the book is definitely professionally edited. I will rate this book four out of four stars. This rating is because this book was sincerely worth every single second I spent reading it. There is nothing to justify removing any stars from my rating.

Calico Lane is a book I will recommend for young boys and girls and even older men or women trying to fight their way through the shame society has placed on their unconventional sexual orientation. Also, I recommend this book to people with other behavioral inclinations and orientations, such as atheists in religious families, homosexuals in homophobic climes, and people having identity crises generally.
